Abstract

The application of pressure to the residual liquid during the solidification of a casting can eliminate both macro- and microporosity from the final product. This relaxes castability and fluidity constraints on the alloys which can be successfully shape cast. Microstructural observations and mechanical properties are reported for squeeze cast AA6061. The problem of pressure-assisted macrosegregation is considered.
