Abstract

Squaric acid is a layered structure with an antiferrodistortive phase transition atTc =373 K. Vertex and Ising models are considered, leading to the conclusion that two-dimensional squaric acid is a realization of the2d X−Y model with a cubic anisotropy, belonging to the same universality class as the Baxter or symmetrical Ashkin-Teller model. Experimental evidence is briefly discussed.
