Abstract

Abstract Squamous‐cell carcinoma (SCC) of the penis is a rare malignancy, accounting for less than 1% of urological cancers in males in Western countries. From all cancers affecting the penis more than 95% consists of SCC. Rare disorders like melanoma and soft tissue disease will not be considered in this summary. Most information regarding clinical course and prognostic factors has been based on relatively few series and case histories; there are no known prospective clinical trials in the field of penile cancer. Therefore bias, on the basis of referral pattern and institutional treatment preferences, cannot be ruled out. Moreover, there are only a few publications analyzing clinical data with multivariate prognostic factor analysis. For classification purposes, at least six classification systems of SCC of the penis have been proposed. Because the TNM system of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) is considered the most universal used classification, the others will not be considered here.
