Abstract

The findings of investigation into chemical and physical sputtering of various graphite materials which can be used as protection materials for the first wall of a thermonuclear reactor are presented. Sputtering of hydrogen ions with energy of 9 keV has been carried out in temperature range of 330–870 K. It has been shown that surface boronizing by the method of chemical transport reactions of MPG-8 graphite decreases chemical sputtering in 2.5–3 times. Deposition of the same coat on carbon glass-ceramic of USB-15 type fully suppresses its chemical sputtering in all temperature range. In the process of sputtering an intensive growth of whiskers composed only of carbon atoms has been observed.
