Abstract

In a 4 π proportional counter, spurious pulses due to field emission at the source backing were observed, when the backing was metallized on one side only. The characteristics of these pulses are reported, and explained in terms of a simple model. From the measurements, a criterion is derived, which indicates whether the Malter effect has to be expected under given experimental conditions or not.
