Abstract
The effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) at three concentrations (0, 1 and 10 µL L-1) for 24 h (Expt. 1) or 24 and 48 h (Expt. 2) on ‘Granola’ potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tuber visual quality and sprout growth for 8 weeks under ambient dark conditions (27.4±0.62°C, 84.6±2.75% RH) was evaluated. Weight loss and sprouting (% sprouting and apical sprout length) did not vary with 1-MCP concentration and treatment duration. Visual quality at 8 weeks after treatment was better in tubers treated longer at 48 h due to lesser shriveling and decay. Visual quality, shriveling and decay were similar in tubers treated for only 24 h but not vitamin C content.
