Abstract

The range of sprinkler rotation nonuniformity for commercial sprinkler products and how this nonuniformity affects overlapped water distribution patterns is of concern to manufacturers, system designers, and users. Sprinkler rotation tests for a wide range of sprinklers showed that the maximum relative rotation deviation, MRD, as defined in this article, usually varied within a range of 20% under practical riser installations. The value of MRD increased significantly with increasing sprinkler riser tilt angle. A computer simulation model for evaluating the effect of MRD and its randomized orientations and quadrants relative to the sprinkler overlapped grid on water uniformity was developed and the model was verified by laboratory experiments. Water uniformity decreased as MRD increased, but the reduction was rather small, never exceeding 3% for most commercial sprinkler products at practical sprinkler spacings. Thus, variation in sprinkler rotation is not a factor in most commercial sprinkler installations.
