Abstract

In an excellent study by Gary Nishioka, DMD, MD , Columbia, Mo, functional endoscopic sinus surgery was analyzed. The study tried to determine the impact of sinus disease and functional endoscopic sinus surgery on 33 patients with asthma. Of these patients, 55% felt their asthma was worsened by sinusitis, and 84% felt functional endoscopic sinus surgery improved their asthma. Of 12 asthma/sinus patients who used systemic steroids, 50% were able to eliminate steroid use after functional endoscopic sinus surgery. The study concluded that since 43% of the cost of asthma is due to hospitalizations and urgent visits to physicians or the emergency department, a significant reduction of health care costs can be realized with functional endoscopic sinus surgery in indicated asthma patients. David Epstein, MD , New York, NY, discussed in detail the applied anatomy of the posterior sinuses in relation to the optic nerve and carotid artery . Fifty cadavers were studied
