Abstract

Analysis of spread E, the spreading frequently observed above the sporadic E layer, shows that it can be caused by the cross-field plasma instability mechanism proposed by Reid [1968] and Chen et al. [1972]. The analysis was based on the determination of the extent of spreading relative to the blanketing frequency of the sporadic E layer, and the results of the analysis were such that they conformed with predictions based on the cross-field instability mechanism.
