Abstract

A method of aerosol spray laryngography has been devised in which the topical anesthetic material and a barium-methylcellulose contrast material are introduced to coat the pharynx and larynx via an atomizer (DeVilbiss) and a source of increased air pressure. The technique is simple to perform and readily tolerated by the patient. A standardization of vocal maneuvers for laryngography would suggest that the minimum vocal maneuvers are quiet respiration (QR), phonation of (AH), phonation of (EEE), modified Valsalva maneuver (MV), and the (EEE) aspirate maneuver. These vocal maneuvers are recorded in the posteroanterior (PA) and lateral projection by spot filming and cine techniques. Evaluation of this standard series of cine studies and films has yielded the most information with the least difficulty.
