Abstract

The environment and its problems have been clear sources of social activity and reflection. These have often been spontaneous and accompanied by vivid expressions of unease and demands. Such tendencies are based upon ways of life, rules of social organization, and particular types of activity. These have recently been accompanied by more specialized reflection and study. One manifestation of this is the relatively new discipline of environmental sociology, a scholarly and practical enterprise that is particularly deserving of attention.
