Abstract

A method for spotting the power quality (PQ) disturbances due to various operational events in a distribution utility network with penetration of wind and solar energy is introduced in this paper. The PQ spotting strategy is used the decomposition of voltage signal using Stockwell transform (ST), and Hilbert transform (HT) to compute the ST PQ detection index (SPDI) and HT PQ detection index (HPDI) respectively. Further, voltage signal is also decomposed using Discrete Wavelet transform (DWT) to compute PQ multiplication factors (PQMF). A combined PQ detection index (CPDI) is computed by multiplication of SPDI, HPDI and PQMFs which is effective to spot PQ issues associated with events such as line to ground (LG) fault, feeder operation, grid outage, load operation and capacitor operation. Location PQ index is evaluated by differentiating the CPDI which is effective to localize the PQ issues in time domain. Sufficiency of method is tested on IEEE-13 node test distribution network (TDN) where wind and solar energy based plants are connected. Results are validated in MATLAB software.
