Abstract

In this paper, meta-heuristic optimization based on Spotted Hyena Optimization (SHO) has been used to evaluate the optimal values of conventional and fractional order PID controller for the load frequency control. Here a multi-area thermal system with single reheat turbine with generation rate constraint (GRC) of 5%/min. has been designed. The comparison has been analyzed between conventional and fractional control parameter tuned by Spotted Hyena Optimization technique (SHOT). Potential of SHOT is proved against PSO algorithm by comparing the results. Based on transient parameter analysis it can be proved that the fractional order proportional-integral-derivative controller (FOPID) having better response than classical PID controller. The eminent advantage of this strategy is its high insensitivity to large random load variation and disturbances. The robustness of the system is analyzed by injecting random load in area one
