Abstract

With the acceleration of the educational paradigm both at home and abroad, and the emergence of the fostering of global competitiveness as a major task in recent years, diverse Japanese proficiency tests have been developed and used in the field of Japanese language education. However, research has been difficult because data are not officially disclosed or their collection is limited in many cases. Moreover, research on the correlation among tests has not accumulated in actual education so that interpretation is often difficult. The present study therefore focused on the Japanese Proficiency Test (JPT) and the Simple Performance-Oriented Test (SPOT), which?though different in nature such as commerciality, reliability and the degree of use in society, as well as duration and the testing method?are often used in Japanese language education in South Korea, especially universities, to measure learners’ Japanese proficiency. The study also reviewed the latest trends in and the future tasks of research. As a result, in the case of the SPOT, which is frequently used as a placement test, its correlation with various Japanese proficiency tests implemented in South Korea and a careful review of its discriminating power when it is applied to domestic learners arose as tasks to be fulfilled. While the JPT has broadened considerably in the scope of its use in South Korea as an officially recognized Japanese proficiency test, disclosed fruits or cases of research were very insufficient, and the continued review of the test’s correlation with diverse foreign language proficiency evaluation methods, discriminating power, theoretical background, and methods of use in Japanese language education emerged as a task to be performed. In particular, in the case of the JPT, considering the current trend of reflecting scores on employment and performance evaluation by a variety of corporations and organs, including universities, specific explication of the degree to which it evaluates test takers’ command of Japanese is urgent.
