Abstract

The subject of research in the article is Polish historical inscriptions on tombstones from Catholic cemeteries in Podilia. The names appeared in visual part of the inscription, created a positive characteristic of a deceased person. The professions and titles were indicated, according to the creator (founder) of the epitaph, were ennobling, valued and deserved, as indicated in the inscription. The tombstone inscriptions were dedicated to women and men. The ennobling element of characteristics for women were the husband’s professional achievements (the forms of “odżężowskie”, as an example) and social origin. In the case of men such activities as: military and governmental service, clergy, health care, lawyers, educators, included scientific and artistic professions.
