ISBN 978-0-375-89535-7$15.99 Reviewed from galleys R Gr. 5-7 At age eleven, Riley Liston is one of the youngest attendees of Camp Olympia, but he hopes that his passion for sports will get him through the two full weeks of softball, basketball, and water-polo competitions that await him. Featuring all of the pranks, legends, homesickness, and bad food that one would expect, camp is an experience Riley endures, then enjoys, pushing his own limits and getting to know his bunkmates. The focus here is solidly on sports, from the camp bulletins that highlight the day's winners and losers at the opening of each chapter, to lots of play-by-play action from Riley's perspective. This is both an appealing sports-centered story and an inside look at camp, and Riley's conflicting emotions reflect the familiar exuberant-to-homesick ups and downs of parental separation. Riley is likable and sympathetic, and while few other characters are developed, the competition for the Big Joe camp trophy and individual honors for best athletes keep the action exciting. A modest, enjoyable sports story, this will get young sports fans and camp aficionados enthused for upcoming summer retreats. Copyright © 2010 The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois
