Abstract

Although legalized sports betting can be a harmless form of entertainment, it also carries high‐stakes risks in the form of harassment targeted at student‐athletes, gambling addictions, and violations of NCAA bylaws. At the annual NCAA Convention, a panel of experts discussed the risks and safeguards related to sports betting, which has been legalized in 47 states. Moderated by Clint Hangebrauck, NCAA Managing Director of Enterprise Risk Management, the panel included Teresa Fiore, Vice President of Partnerships at EPIC Global Solutions; Timothy W. Fong, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA, and Co‐Director of the UCLA Gambling Studies Program; Mark Hicks, J.D., NCAA Managing Director of Enforcement; and Jonathan Hirshler, Co‐Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Signify Group, an ethical data science company.
