Abstract

Banning cigarette ads from the airwaves in 1971 was a triumph for antitobacco forces. But it may have caused tobacco companies to redirect their massive advertising clout to sports sponsorship and marketing. While the debate continues about whether associating tobacco advertising with sports influences America's young people, the actions of physicians, parents, and professional athletes could send a clear message to sports-minded youth.
