Abstract

ABSTRACT During the period of French colonization, many Vietnamese people settled in Laos; they were so numerous that some Lao elite members felt that they were experiencing a dual occupation. From 1929 sports activities were managed by the French officials to control the local youth and prevent the rise of nationalism. Although previous works on the origins of Lao nationalism have neglected sports, these elements formed part of the development of a new Lao identity. This article aims to analyze the theory that these activities played a determining role, acting as a link between cultural rapprochement with the French overlords and the political affirmation of Lao nationalism.
