Abstract

The systematic development of sport social work at the University of Michigan, School of Social Work began in 2012, and continues to grow as of 2021. Using sport as an intervention in MSW curriculum and field education has also started to become more available for students interested in training as sport social workers. This article will review and discuss several key ways that social work and sport intersect. Utilizing a social justice lens, we will then describe the innovative approaches used to create and build social work and sport field practicum experiences for MSW students and identify possible future directions for sport social work areas of training and practice.
