Abstract

This chapter introduces the reader to the context of sport in the Iberian Peninsula. It also describes the purpose and the organisation of the book and provides a summary of the 21 chapters that are organised into five parts. These chapters examine the social, cultural, political, and economic challenges, transformations, and opportunities that exist in the field of sport in Spain and Portugal. Each chapter describes and provides a critical analysis of matters related to sport that affect not only sport organisations and athletes but also impact the local and regional communities across the Iberian Peninsula. The collection of essays brings the perspectives of the most qualified scholars in the field of sport management, sport economics, sport law, sport sociology, and sport policy from the most prestigious universities in Spain and Portugal. Because all of the contributors are from Spain and Portugal, we considered their perspectives to be from ‘inside the region’.
