Abstract

The following study of Begonia Schmidtiana Regel was originally undertaken as an investigation in sporogenesis, but because of the remarkable findings it later developed into an investigation of the problem of the determination of sex in a monoecious plant. The plant was selected from among a number of species of Begonia in cultivation at the Botanical Gardens of the University of Michigan chiefly because of the abundance of its flowers which made possible the collections of large amounts of cytological material from a single plant. The results lead to the exclusive study of this species, but it is hoped that investigations may be continued in other species of the genus and among related forms.
