Abstract

Albian and Cenomanian sediments from basins in West Africa are characterized by organisms of uncertain botanical affinities which have in common projections like “élatères” of Equisetum spores. They include the genera GaleacorneaStover emend., Elaterosporites nov. gen. (GaleacorneaStover pro parte), ElaterocolpitesJardiné et Magloire, Sofrepites nov. gen. and an incertae sedis. The stratigraphic range of species in the basins of Senegal (plus Gambia and Portuguese Guinea), Ivory Coast,Nigeria, Gabon, Algeria and Maranhão (Brazil) is given in a comparative chart. These sporomorphs, which extend from Middle Albian to Upper Cenomanian (Turonian?), have a high stratigraphical value.
