Abstract

Summary: Vegetative cells of Clostridium perfringens were rapidly eliminated from the digestive tract of holoxenic mice when they were inoculated per os. A small number of spores was sometimes found in the faeces a few hours after the vegetative cells had been ingested, but they were eliminated even more rapidly than the vegetative cells. When spores of Cl. perfringens were inoculated, they were eliminated as vegetative cells. When either vegetative cells or spores of Cl. perfringens were introduced per os into axenic mice, the strain became established and formed spores in the various segments of the digestive tract.
