Abstract

1. 1. A case of rupture of a papillary muscle in the left ventricle is presented. 2. 2. The etiological relationship of myocardial infarction is stressed. 3. 3. The striking frequency of pulmonary edema and the mechanism of its cause are discussed. 4. 4. It is suggested that the appearance of a loud mitral systolic murmur and marked intractable pulmonary edema in the course of a myocardial infarction produces a syndrome which should make the clinical diagnosis of a rupture of a papillary muscle in the left ventricle tenable.
