Abstract

The knee is the second most common joint to be afflicted with ischemia and bone death. Two forms have been documented—spontaneous osteonecrosis and secondary osteonecrosis. Although similar in symptoms, accurate diagnosis is essential because different treatments are required to optimize outcomes. The article discusses osteonecrosis of the knee, management of spontaneous and secondary osteonecrosis, as illustrated by the case of an 83-year-old female with recent trauma to the knee.
