Abstract

FOCAL areas of necrosis in the striated muscle have been described recently in the turkey by Rigdon et al. (1960). Associated with this muscular degeneration has been a pendulous crop. Degeneration of striated muscle in the rabbit, mouse and guinea pig has been attributed to a deficiency of vitamin E (Mason, 1951–52), to potassium in the rat and dog (Smith, 1950) and to choline in the rabbit (Hove and Copeland, 1954). Forbus (1926) and Dalldorf et al. (1949) observed a similar type of necrosis in bacterial and viral infections. Encephalomalacia is a characteristic lesion in vitamin E deficiency in the chicken (Pap-penheimer, 1933, 1939).The spontaneous occurrence of focal areas of degeneration in striated muscle and focal areas of degeneration in the brain have been observed in a group of 34 turkeys.
