Abstract

14 cases of spontaneous haemothorax following cessation of artifical pneumothorax refills are reported. The diagnosis of intrapleural haemorrhage may confidently be made whenever a large pleural effusion suddenly develops shortly after the abandonment of an artificial pneumothorax. These haemothoraces are shown not to have been due to active pleural or pulmonary tuberculosis. They may have an endogenous mechanical cause.
