Abstract

A new toroidal Z pinch device ZP-2 has been constructed and low plasma current (<25 kA) experiments have been carried out. An axisymmetric force free field configuration of the pinch parameter 0 of 1.3 to 1.4 is successfully established from spontaneous generation of toroidal field flux and is sustained for nearly 100 µs. During the setting up phase, local toroidal fields accompanied with m=1 perturbations are produced, and develop to local toroidal field flux and global toroidal field flux. Axial asymmetry results in toroidal rotation of the plasma and the configuration is axially symmetrized. During the sustainment phase (θ=constant), field flux discretely increased together with the plasma current. Termination of the configuration results from decay of loop voltage and is accompanied with appearance of axial asymmetry on field flux.
