Abstract

Spontaneous emission exists both in classical and quantum theories. Vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field give an essential contribution to the intensity of the spontaneous emission in the low-lying levels of matter. Vacuum fluctuations play a crucialrole when matter is in its ground state. They are the cause of the stability of the ground state.
