Abstract

Summary 1. A review of published cases of atlanto-axial dislocation in ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis is given. 2. The aetiology of spontaneous atlanto-axial dislocation is discussed. 3. A description is given of 2 cases of ankylosing spondylitis and 1 case of rheumatoid arthritis complicated by atlanto-axial dislocation. 4. Commentary is made on these cases emphasizing the importance of being aware that atlanto-axial dislocation can complicate ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis and that dislocation can occur at any time if the disease is active.
