Abstract

Abstract Diquaternary salts of 1,10-phenanthroline or, 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenenthroline (viologen), prepared according to the Menshutkin rection, developed intense colors spontaneously, presumably due to high reduction potentials. The extent and λmax of the colors developed were dependent upon both the kind of viologen and the media such as solvents and polymer matrices.
