Abstract

In order to evaluate the significance of CSF loss from the rostrobasal subarachnoid space via the olfactory route, studies after eisternal and/or intravenous injection of 131I and/or 125I RIHSA were carried out in four series of normal dogs. The experiments included radioisotope cisternograms and ventriculograms, and radioactivity counting of fluids collected from the nasal cavities. It was shown that a considerable amount of CSF leaks into the nasal submucosal space, local lymphaties, and into the nasal cavity itself. The importance of this finding in limiting the value of dogs as subjects in hydrocephalus research is discussed.
