Abstract

Tolerance to self-phase modulation (SPM) is evaluated in a dispersion-compensated transmission system using carrier-suppressed optical single side-band (SSB) modulation, which employed a four-branched LiNbO3 modulator and an ideal Hilbert transformer. Waveform degradation is dominated by the peak power of a Hilbert-transformed signal. RZ format is preferred to NRZ for optical SSB transmission.
