Abstract

The properties of complex compounds of transition metals can be substantially characterized by thed-electrons. In the present paper all the strong-field configurations arising through the influence of strong fields of trigonal and rhombic symmetries fromdn (n=1, 2, ..., 10) configurations are given. Owing to the effect of strong fields these strong-field configurations split. The symmetries and the multiplicites of the splitting products have been determined by the group theory. To classify the splitting products a new method was developed which, because of its group-theoretical basis, is exact.
