Abstract

Once-daily administration of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) remains in the forefront of treatment for peptic ulcers. However, 2 studies presented at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) [New Orleans, US; May 1998] suggest significantly better gastric acid suppression is achieved when PPIs are given twice daily to patients with poorly controlled nocturnal gastric acidity and acid breakthrough. In another report, investigators from Scotland correlated post-treatment rebound acid increase with on-treatment pH levels, while another study group failed to see any significant evidence of the rebound phenomenon one week after treatment had stopped.
