Abstract

Splendidofilaria passerina sp. n. (Nematoda: Filarioidea) is described from the wall of the pulmonary arteries of the English sparrow, Passer domesticus domesticus L., collected in Illinois. Dis- tinguishing characters are cephalic extremity with 4 submedian papillae and 2 amphids; long, slender esophagus; male with 4 pairs of postanal and 2 pairs of preanal papillae; and posterior extremity with 2 fleshy protuberances. Unsheathed microfilariae occur in the blood. This is the first record of a filarial nematode from the English sparrow.
