Abstract

We report the coprological diagnosis of Spirometra mansonoides parasitizing six urban cats (Felis catus) and one maracajá cat (Leopardus wiedii) in 2018. Fecal samples were collected in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul helminth laboratory and processed by the Willis-Mollay and Lutz methods. A brief review in felids is described for the importance in endemic regions, for the underestimated prevalence and for being a zoonotic infection. Periodic fecal exams should be performed on animals in areas at risk or in contact with predisposing factors.
