Abstract

Spirochaetosis is an infection caused by Brachyspira which are Gram-negative bacteria. The disease classically affects the large bowel and appendix and has not been previously described in the gallbladder. Spirochaetosis is diagnosed on histology and has a characteristic microscopic appearance. We report a case of spirochaetosis of the gallbladder, found incidentally in a cholecystectomy specimen, in a 65-year-old male with acute-on-chronic cholecystitis and cholelithiasis. The gallbladder epithelium showed the presence of a thick fuzzy brush border, and a Warthin-Starry stain highlighted the presence of spirochaetes.
