Abstract

Spirituality is a much misunderstood term, concept and phenomenon and at best is frequently confused with religion. It is paid ‘lip service’ and at worst side-lined or even ignored by many healthcare professionals, including nurses and healthcare assistants (HCAs). This series of nine articles sets out to briefly explore the meaning of spirituality and apply this meaning to a number of service user or patient groups within a number of healthcare and clinical settings. This first article sets out the reasons for this series and a brief indication as to its content.
