Abstract

This article gives a short overview of the main manifestations of spirit possession. It outlines previous theoretical approaches, like psychological, sociological, and hermeneutical interpretations, but focuses predominantly on newer developments. These are the important roles of spirit possession in coping with the consequences of war, especially in postsocialist countries as well as in the increasing exchange of knowledge and import of spirit performances between diaspora communities and their countries of origin.
