Abstract

A new time-of-flight method for single crystal structure studies is proposed and checked experimentally. In this method a polychromatic neutron beam of constant intensity is used and the single crystal sample spins (rotates) with a speed of the order 10 3–10 4 rpm. The intensities of neutrons scattered at a fixed angle by the spinning crystal are measured by means of a counter connected to a multichannel time analyser. Examples of neutron patterns are given, the formula for the integrated intensity derived and the problem of extinction discussed in some detail. It is shown that using this method the extinction can be diminished or even excluded.
