Abstract
Abstract Spin-flip transitions excited in inelastic scattering of protons, electrons and photons (magnetic resonances) have been studied both experimentally and theoretically for many decades with ever improving means. The work up to 1980 has been reviewed, for instance, by Hanna (HAN80). An extensive review of the work up to 1990 on these giant magnetic resonances can be found in reference (RAM91). Spin-flip modes can be excited by hadronic and electromagnetic probes and also, in principle, by weak probes. All these probes strongly favour excitation of the isovector spin-flip transitions over the isoscalar spin-flip ones.
