Abstract

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive neuromuscular disease caused by defects in the survival motor neuron gene (SMN1). The disease, which progresses with the destruction of motor neurons in the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord, affects the voluntary muscles, causing symmetric weakness in the extremities and atrophy in the extremities and trunk. There are 5 clinical types classified according to the age of onset and severity of the disease. In recent years, there have been many developments in the treatment and care standards of the disease.
