Abstract

Approximately 12,000 patients per year sustain a spinal cord injury in the United States. Morbidity, mortality, and medical costs are high in patients with spinal cord injuries due to complications of the injury. Prehospital management of potential spinal cord injuries consists of airway stabilization and spinal precautions. When patients with suspected spinal cord injuries present to the emergency department, the airway, breathing, and circulation must first be addressed. If a spinal cord injury is found, a complete neurologic exam must be obtained. Keys to management of spinal cord injuries include early intubation if necessary, management of neurogenic shock, and evaluation for concomitant injuries. Patients who are found to have spinal cord injuries must be transferred rapidly to a center with spine surgery capabilities for potential operative management.
