Abstract

Spin waves in nickel ultrathin films consisted of 3, 5, 7 and 9 monolayers (MLs) are investigated within the framework of the multiband model. Surface modes, relatively well-localized, are found in all considered cases. Energies of the surface modes appear to be practically independent on the thickness of the film (except the 3ML case). On the other hand, energies of bulk modes increase very strongly when thickness of the film is decreasing, particularly in region of low values of the wave vector. The spin-wave density of states is also calculated and profoundly discussed. The substantial enhancement of the surface density of states is obtained for all films considered.
