Abstract
Detailed magnetic susceptibility measurements on the polycrystalline complexes [Fe(phen) 2(NCS) 2] (phen = 1.10-phenanthroline) and [Fe(bipy) 2(NCS) 2] (bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine) have revealed a narrow hysteresis in both systems indicative of a first-order nature of the spin transition 5T 2g(O h) ⇌ 1 A tg(O h). The crystal quality, in particular crystal defects (through preparation or grinding), have been shown to influence strongly the spin transition behaviour.
