Abstract
We investigate the spin-spin interactions in quarkonium with the usual assumption that they arise from one-gluon exchange. All the data on S-wave mesons (from light to heavy quarks) are fitted extremely well. In particular, the form of the splittings for the meson spectrum is shown, by a simple scaling argument, to favour a linear confining potential.
