Abstract

We evaluate spin-spin and spin-orbit potentials from lattice gauge theory simulations for the pure gauge sector with both SU(2) and SU(3) colour groups. We pay particular attention to understanding the normalization of these results. The tensor, scalar and “opposite side” spin-orbit potentials are close to the results from perturbative gluon exchange and we discuss in detail this comparison on a lattice. The “same side” spin-orbit potential is substantial and long range - it can be associated with the confining component of the central potential if the confining mechanism is effectively Lorentz scalar. Our results for several β-values allow a discussion of scaling.
