Abstract

We have studied the occurrence of spin–reorientation transitions in the tetragonal La 2− x Ho x Co 14B compounds in the concentration range 0.2≤ x≤1.8. Spin orientations in these compounds arise from the competition between the Ho-sublattice anisotropy and the Co sublattice anisotropy. The former dominates at low temperatures, favouring an easy-cone direction of the magnetization at the lowest temperatures followed by an easy magnetization direction parallel to the c-axis at intermediate temperatures. The Co-sublattice anisotropy dominates at high temperatures and favours an easy direction perpendicular to the c-axis. A magnetic phase diagram is presented.
